How To Care For Your Underwear: Do's and Don'ts of Washing, Drying & More

How To Care For Your Underwear: Do's and Don'ts of Washing, Drying & More

While your outfit is what the world can see, your underwear is the support underneath it all. Good lingerie can truly set the tone for your day, so to make sure your lovely undies stay looking and feeling their best, we have a few pro tips.

How to care for your lingerie

First thing’s first: laundry. You need to know how to wash your lingerie to avoid damaging it and keep it looking (and feeling) good for a long time.

How to wash your undies

We’ve all been guilty of throwing our hand wash-only undies into the washing machine, but if you can avoid it–your underwear will thank you for it! There’s no debate here, the best way to wash underwear is hand washing. Especially if it’s lace or made from a delicate fabric. The same applies to bras and other undies. (Also, make sure to keep your clasped bras separate from the panties to avoid damage and unwanted snagging!).

Step 1 - Fill your sink (bucket, giant bowl–or whatever you’re using) with cool or lukewarm water.

Step 2 - Add a small amount of detergent that’s suitable for hand washing delicates. Try to not use too much detergent, as this can leave a residue on your undies.

Step 3 - Add your underwear to the basin and swish them around in the water to make sure they’re fully submerged.

Step 4 - Leave your underwear to soak for up to 20 minutes. In this time, come back to move it around every now and then. This just means swirling it around a bit more and gently rubbing the garments to remove any residue.

Step 5 - Empty the water from the basin and rinse each pair of underwear with cool, clean water to remove all the detergent.

Step 6 - Gently squeeze out the excess water. You could use a clean towel to press the water out.

Step 7 - If you can, hang your undies to dry in the sunshine (or by your window) — the sun helps to kill any bacteria. And if you don’t have anywhere to hang it up, you could lay it to dry flat on a towel.

While we strongly recommend that you hand wash your lingerie, we know how it is– sometimes the washing machine is just too tempting. So when you can't hand wash, using a wash bag (and gentle cycle!) is the next best thing.

Machine Wash (if you must)

Step 1 - Put your underwear into a lingerie bag. This protects delicates from getting tangled or snagged by other items in the load. Don’t mix bras with hooks in with other garments here, as the hooks could be damaging too.

Step 2 - Set the wash to a delicate cycle at a cold temperature.

Step 3 - Use the same detergent for delicates that you would with a hand wash.

Step 4 - Start the wash.

Step 5 - Dry the clothes in the same way as above, air dry or lay flat to dry.

Never, ever machine dry your lace underwear. Trust us. You’ve got to this point of protecting your underwear through cold washing – so don’t ruin your efforts now! The heat in your dryer will damage the delicate fibers in your underwear. It’s not worth the risk, trust us.

If it sounds like we’re being dramatic, it’s because we kind of are–and there’s science behind it.There are molecular bonds that hold the spandex fibers together in your lingerie and over time, the heat will break them (and there’s no going back!)

Dryers are not your lace lingerie's friend.

How to store your underwear

Organize your undies in a way that sparks joy, or, at least a way that makes sense (for you!).

Step 1 - Separate your padded and non-padded bras; maybe separate undies by silhouette or fabric.

Step 2 - Fasten the clasp of your bras with hooks to avoid snagging.

Step 3 - Neatly stack them in your drawers one in front of the other, like a filing system. Your padded bras, non-padded bras, thongs, boyshorts, etc can all have their own section. Maybe color code if you’re really in the mood-boosting zone.

Pro tip: if you’re looking for longevity, don’t fold your bras in half to save space, and don’t hang them up as this can cause them to lose shape. Take care of them, and they’ll keep their shape and hold your boobs for years.
